  SE² Leadership Award Competition

  The 2013 Sustainability and Energy Efficiency (SE²) Leadership Award recognizes leadership in energy efficient and sustainable design, construction, and operation of Wisconsin commercial buildings and related systems.  

  The application cost is $150 per project and is non-refundable.  If your company or firm would like to enter more than once, each additional project can be paid for as a "guest" when registering.

  This speaker presentation will demonstrate the sustainable and “green” advantages of wood used as a structural building material by looking at topics such as managed forests, carbon sequestration, life cycle analysis and the carbon cycle. This presentation provides an introduction to Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) – a solid wood structural product used in the walls, floors and roofs of buildings. Topics of discussion will include design issues and specific examples of buildings constructed of CLT or Cross Laminated Timber.

  Instructor Bio:

  Archie Landreman lives in Racine, Wisconsin and is the Regional Director for WoodWorks in the North Central U.S. He also leads the National Accounts Program for WoodWorks. He has been active in the wood and structural building component industry since 1970, and has extensive experience with lumber, structural wood panels, prefabricated wall panels, wood trusses, engineered wood beams and I-joists. He has held various sales and sales management positions in the wood truss and engineered wood products industry, and owns Wood Tech Engineered Products and WoodTech Consultants. He is an active and participating member of the American Institute of Architects, Association of Licensed Architects, Construction Specifications Institute, Forest Products Society, International Council of Shopping Centers, National Frame Building Association, Structural Building Components Association, Structural Engineers Association of Wisconsin and the Structural Insulated Panel Association. Archie also works closely with The Forest Products Lab in Madison, Wisconsin and the North American Wholesale Lumber Association.

• Fox Valley: Peak Oil - Transition Towns

  Peak Oil – the point at which the Earth's oil supply begins to dwindle. At this point, production of oil no longer continues the historic upswing that helped create the modern world. Global warming and other environmental issues aside, realizing the growing economies in China and India, along with continuing global population growth, will we continue to have enough affordable fossil fuels?  And for how long?
  
  In response to this peak oil question, Transition Towns (also known as transition network or transition movement) is a grassroots network of communities that are working to build resilience in response to peak oil, climate change, and economic instability.  The main aim of Transition Towns generally, and echoed by the towns locally, is to raise awareness of sustainable living and build local ecological resilience in the near future.  Communities are encouraged to seek out methods for reducing energy usage as well as reducing their reliance on long supply chains that are totally dependent on fossil fuels for essential items (such as food).

  Instructor Bios:

  Stacia Fields-Johnson studied at UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, and Sonoma State University, holds a BA in Studio Art and BS in Psychology and has completed coursework toward her Masters. She led teacher training and Permaculture workshops at the Occidental Arts and Ecology Center. Stacia served on the Santa Rosa, CA, Board of Community Service, focusing on mixed-use zoning/green space as part of the 2020 General Plan for the State of CA development team. In addition, she has received several awards from the California State Senate and Assembly for her community work, which includes service as a redevelopment zone community liaison, leading numerous workshops on sustainable neighborhoods and green communities, and founding a youth arts program for at-risk, urban youth. Since 2006, this avid organic master gardener, her husband and two teenagers call the clean air, fresh water and a safer community of Waupaca County home, where Stacia recently assisted with attaining a 17-kilowatt PV system for Waupaca High School.
  
  Jane Haasch received her BA in Mathematics and Physics from Mount Mary College and further education at Marquette, Notre Dame, and UW-Madison. She has been a life-long educator, teaching math at numerous public and private schools, most recently retiring after 23 years at Fox Valley Technical College. Jane’s involvement in renewable energy began in 1979 with numerous and varied projects, including establishing a 40-acre farm south of Waupaca on which she built a solar home and installed a 1.9 Kw grid-tied tracker to provide all the electricity. A MREA supporter and volunteer since 1990, Jane has actively launched and supported its goals through community contributions, including sponsoring a women’s solar PV workshop, instrumental involvement in PV system acquisition for numerous area school and municipal buildings, and ongoing development of 35+ acres into a sustainable neighborhood. She is a member of the Town of Dayton Plan Commission and is a volunteer with several non-profits.

  Rob Zimmerman is currently the Manager
  -Engineering, Water Conservation, and Sustainability at Kohler Co., Kohler, Wisconsin.  He is involved with all aspects of water conservation and sustainability related to plumbing fixtures and faucets. Rob currently co-chairs the Water Sense and Water Efficient Products Committee for the Alliance for Water Efficiency and is a member of the Green Technical Committee for IAPMO, USGBC's Water Efficiency Technical Advisory Group. He is a LEED Accredited Professional and on the Board of Directors for WGBA. Rob has a BS in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University and a MS in Engineering Management from the Milwaukee School of Engineering.

  This comprehensive one day workshop will give you the information you need to study, prepare and pass the LEED Green Associate exam. Passing the LEED GA exam shows that you have mastered the fundamental building blocks necessary to utilize green design, construction, operations and third party rating systems. The LEED GA credential will increase your marketability and is the first step in becoming a LEED professional.

  The first half of the workshop covers all learning points of the exam. The second half reviews the 14 primary references the exam is based on and includes a sample test.

  Instructor Bio:

  Heather McCombs, LEED AP, is the Executive Director of WGBA. Heather’s experience with LEED exam preparation instruction includes the development of Fox Valley Technical College’s LEED Core Curriculum program. Every participant in a McCombs led exam preparation course who has taken the test, has passed. McCombs attributes this to the comprehensive and rigorous presentation of the material and the dedication and passion the participants have for increasing their knowledge about sustainability in the built environment and third party rating systems. McCombs was a LEED project team intern with Boldt Construction for one year on the LEED Gold ThedaCare Physician’s Clinic in Darboy. Before joining WGBA, McCombs was a commercial interior designer and participated on the project teams for Morton’s Pharmacy in Oshkosh, Grand Chute Fire Station, Apple Creek YMCA in Appleton, and Fond du Lac Credit Union as well as many tenant build outs.

  This course has been approved for 7 AIA credits!

• Energy Benchmarking Forum – Exploring Benchmarking Commercial Buildings

  Energy benchmarking is the next big step towards making our buildings more sustainable.  The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) has made energy benchmarking a key part of their current advocacy campaign.  This session will review successful programs that have been implemented in other cities and municipalities around the US and discuss what type of program would suit cities in our region moving toward sustainability like Madison, WI.  The session will be 50% overview of other cities’ programs, the benefits, their hurdles; and 50% open forum discussion.
  

  A major objective of this forum is to gauge the level of interest among key stakeholders in creating an energy benchmarking program for municipalities and to better understand the process of how we could go about setting up the program.

  Moderator Bio's:

  

  Manus McDevitt, PE, LEED AP is a founding partner of Sustainable Engineering Group.  Manus provides commissioning, retro-commissioning, energy modeling and renewable energy design services in Wisconsin and throughout the US. Manus is a Past-President of the Madison chapter of ASHRAE and is a co-chair of WGBA’s Advocacy committee. 

  

  Matthew Darga is the Director of Commercial Property Management for Urban Land Interests in downtown Madison.  In his role, Matthew has driven portfolio wide environmental stewardship initiatives.  The most notable is the dramatic turn-around of the US Bank Plaza Building on the Capital Square, which culminated in a LEED EBOM Gold certification in 2011.  Matthew also serves on numerous Boards, including the Madison Chapter of the International Facility Management Association, and the Wisconsin Green Building Alliance.

  LEED Green Associate Exam Prep

  This comprehensive one day workshop will give you the information you need to study, prepare and pass the LEED Green Associate exam. Passing the LEED GA exam shows that you have mastered the fundamental building blocks necessary to utilize green design, construction, operations and third party rating systems. The LEED GA credential will increase your marketability and is the first step in becoming a LEED professional.

  The first half of the workshop covers all learning points of the exam. The second half reviews the 14 primary references the exam is based on.
  

  • Participants need to bring laptops.
    

  • Slide packet and practice exam included.

  Instructor Bio:

  Heather McCombs, LEED AP, is the Executive Director of WGBA. Heather’s experience with LEED exam preparation instruction includes the development of Fox Valley Technical College’s LEED Core Curriculum program. Every participant in a McCombs led exam preparation course who has taken the test, has passed. McCombs attributes this to the comprehensive and rigorous presentation of the material and the dedication and passion the participants have for increasing their knowledge about sustainability in the built environment and third party rating systems. McCombs was a LEED project team intern with Boldt Construction for one year on the LEED Gold ThedaCare Physician’s Clinic in Darboy. Before joining WGBA, McCombs was a commercial interior designer and participated on the project teams for Morton’s Pharmacy in Oshkosh, Grand Chute Fire Station, Apple Creek YMCA in Appleton, and Fond du Lac Credit Union as well as many tenant build outs.

  This course has been approved for 7 AIA credits!

  LEED for Neighborhood Development is a seldom used rating system. During this site tour and presentation, learn what went into making Westlawn a LEED for Neighborhood Development while maintaining its affordable income housing status. Discussion on nationally-recognized Growing Power and community garden. Sustainable features including Geothermal, rain gardens, high efficient building envelopes, and a 3rd party HERS rating testing that included blower door testing. LEED for Homes in development pursuing LEED Platinum certification, all other buildings built to the same standards as LEED home.
  

  Presenters:

  Glen Radford is Project Manager for Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee and was integral to the development of Westlawn.
  

  Phil Vetterkind served as the LEED consultant for Westlawn. Working together Glen and Phil brought the project to life, making Westlawn one of Wisconsin's and the United States' first LEED for Neighborhood Development Stage III project.

  The 2013 Greening the Heartland Conference is the 10th anniversary of the premier annual conference on green building and sustainability programs in the Midwest. The conference has a tradition of providing both lively dialogue on issues of environmental importance along with tangible, proven approaches for green building projects and sustainable development. Featuring interesting keynote speakers and multi- track accredited educational sessions, GTH2013 promises to provide a variety of benefits for both businesses and individuals to learn, exchange ideas, and discuss opportunities within our Midwest environmental context.
  

  GTH2013 seeks to provide partners in all areas of the green building industry the opportunity to sharpen their skills, increase knowledge, and meet other professionals.
