    Course: Retrocommissioning of Existing Buildings

Credits: Session is pre-approved for 1.0 AIA learning unit and can be reported for 1.0 credits for other professional credentials (such as GBCI, PDH, AICP, or ASID).

Presenter(s): Manus McDevitt and Alex Harris, Sustainable Engineering Group

Summary: There are many opportunities to reduce energy consumption in existing commercial buildings. With some minor adjustments and changes it’s often possible to reduce energy bills by up to 15%. Further reductions can be made through capital improvements involving upgrading walls, windows, roof, HVAC equipment, lighting and domestic hot water systems. This presentation will review the process of evaluating the potential of energy saving opportunities and look at how they are typically implemented in buildings. Case studies of example projects will be presented. We will also highlight grants and incentives that are available to help offset the costs of these upgrades. And we will provide an overview on how retro-commissioning ties into LEED-EB and an explanation of the related pre-requisites and credits.

Summary:  Recent research has found that current work environments are fulfilling the needs for collaboration and communication, but are doing a poor job of providing an acoustical environment free from distractions and conducive for productivity and speech privacy. Participants will leave with an understanding of how to identify interior design factors that will signal the need for sound masking and approaches to address the issues.

Summary:  The Integrative Design Process is different from the conventional, or linear, design process. A linear process approaches each problem directly and separately, while an integrated process approaches each problem from the varied viewpoints of multiple participants and the issues they represent. LEED Fellow John Boecker describes what the IP credit means, how to take advantage of its opportunities, and engage in a process yielding better building performance than conventional means.
